Ecodesign Ready Stoves – What Does it Mean?

There is a lot in the media about wood burning stoves and the introduction of Ecodesign Ready stoves.  Let us guide you through what this means to you.

The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) formed in 2008 to promote the benefits of wood-burning stoves and represents the majority of manufacturers and distributors of stoves, wood suppliers and allied equipment, operating in the UK.  It works with government departments to develop stoves that are efficient with a focus on significantly reducing the production of CO2 and other particulate missions. Particulate emissions are organic particles that come from incomplete combustion of wood.

Ecodesign is a new European-wide programme to lower emissions and improve air quality. It will become mandatory for all new stoves to be manufactured to this standard by 2022. With the targeted introduction of combustion air at higher levels in the fire box, any particles of wood are reignited before they leave the stove leading to a reduction in CO, NOx and OGC compounds.  Already, some of the manufacturers are producing stoves that meet or exceed the Ecodesign , which illustrates the drive from within the industry to ensure that wood burning stoves remain an excellent choice for people who are looking for a sustainable source of heating.

Independent research conducted, on behalf of the SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) has shown that SIA Ecodesign Ready stoves can reduce particulate emissions by 90{aa69ab7c86764e4f99c9ef196dbe496fc15b75e761e13a2a737eb6a807f31b17} compared to an open fire and 80{aa69ab7c86764e4f99c9ef196dbe496fc15b75e761e13a2a737eb6a807f31b17} compared to an old stove.
